Is it really illegal to exchange currency in venezuela?

I travelled in Venezuela last year, this is what you do, dont listen to the scarey answers by the others. Take USD cash, the managers of hostels, hotels and shops will be happy to exchange USD cash at a rate of 7, dont use atm machines they only will give you a rate of 4.3, and dont change in banks. Change your money on the black market at many places, it's easy, and this is considered normal in Venezuela to change on the black market.

I am born and raised in Venezuela, but I live in Denmark. I have had the same problem. My mum brings dollars to Venezuela because it's really hard to get dollars there, and you will get a very good price in the black market if you know someone there, because then they can buy things internationally. Once, my mum didn't have enough money to pay for a taxi, so she exchanged 100 dollars in a perfume store at the airport. They gave her a regular price, but it's not illegal as far as I know. Everyone wants dollars, no one will tell the police. Do you speak Spanish? The cashiers don't tend to speak any English at all, even if they work at airports. But if you want to exchange a larger amount, like a 1000 dollars then you could go to an arabian liquor store, not the cheap ones. They usually take in dollars from Americans. Finding someone who will take your dollars is not a problem at all, the real problem is finding someone who will not trick you. Before you go, make sure to check the currency chart and add 1 bolivar more because you're selling them in the "black market", not in an actual currency converter shop. But if you choose to go to an airport currency converter booth, then you will probably get the normal price.

It is completely legal to exchange your dollars at the official rate and at officially designated exchange offices.. The rate is One USA dollar equals 4.3 Venezuelan bolivares. There is another illegal parallel exchange market. But you can get in all kinds of trouble if you choose to use this system and are caught you may receive a huge fine and be immediately deported from the country.

It is illegal to exchange money at market rates. You are supposed to do it in government approved exchanges that give you a much lower exchange rate.

No, It is only illegal to exchange currency in the ''black market''.

1. yes, it is illegal. 2. Why do you want to go there? it's very violent nowadays.

hi im going to venezuela a week and 2 days from now. just yesterday me and my mom learned that nowhere in nyc will exchange our money for bolivars! so someone told us that in the airport (Simón Bolívar International Airport where we going to land) there is a booth that can exchange it for us. but now i was in the internet and someone said that its ILLEGAL over there to exchange usd to bolivares or vice versa! i want to be able to buy stuff as memory... and someone else online said that there are people over in the airport that will change it for us but they might scam us. im really confused what can i do? im planning not to take so much (maybe 50) because if its really illegal whats the point of taking a lot of money if i cant even change it back... someone helppp!!
