I would really like to advice you to take the bus, but lol, I myself have trouble with it, and hate to take the bus, It's the worse way of transportation you could ever expect to choose.
So It's great that you can afford taxis, but there arent any other ways to transport in the capital, the only 2 best ways to transport in Lima are number 1, driving, 2, taxis.
Dont even think about the bus, you'll usually end up being late for class, because the bus drivers love to stop at every bus stop to get more passangers and make cash.
You can't use bykes, because it will not be safe for you, most drivers in Lima dont respect bykes.
And if you're going to live in the andes, or jungle, then forget about what I said, the jungle and andes are different, and their traffic is not as crowded as the one in Lima, u'll do fine taking taxes.
However the best option for you would be to use ur aunt's vehicle, and drive, it's up to you, and please next time be more specific, that way we can help better.
Hope this helps.
My wife works at the Italian School (Antonio Raimondi). Every year, new teachers come from Italy to stay from 1 to 5 years. 95% don't buy a car, because they all live in the Miraflores district and go to work taking a taxi between 3 co-workers in the same situation.
If your only staying 1 year, then you don't have to buy a car.
Lima is cheaper than USA
Take a bus. Quit worrying about this now. I am sure your aunt and uncle can help you find the best route to each place you must go and tell you if there is a bus you can take or if you need to use a taxi. Taxi fares there are far less than in the U.S. It would help if you had told us what city in Peru you will be in.
If it is for one year only, then you don't need to buy a car, you can use public transit or taxis which are much cheaper than those in the US or Europe. However, public transit are safer than the subways in the US, we don't kill people in the public transportation
I know people who live there and have cars, but don't drive because the traffic is so crazy. Taxis are cheap and there are lots of buses.
depends on what kind of life style you plan on living here.
the place where you are going to be living, is far from your places of study?
you plan only on studying and staying home?
you plan on partying on the weekends? what places?
depending on all of that, $4000 might not be enough for a year.
Lima isnt a cheap place to live.
I'm going to live there for a year to study some things but I really don't want to drive there. For anyone who lives or has been there how can I get around. I'm going to need to get around a lot for my classes and other personal things that I'm going to be doing there that would be too expensive here, including some medical things and if I were to rely on taxis I would have to pay for about 16 taxis a week. I'm taking $4000 so I guess I could afford it but I'm just trying to see if there might be another way. I'm living with my aunt and uncle so I won't really have many expenses.
