You are comparing one city with two countries. If you were to compare Caracas with Juarez, Mexico than Caracas would be safer. Yes Caracas does have dangers. However if you follow normal
security problems you should not have problems. I lived in Venezuela for 30 years and traveled extensively throughout the country. I never once had the slightest problem for myself or my family's well being. If you learn to treat the Venezuelan people with due respect you will have no problems. However if you are a conceited ugly American - watch out.
It is very bad in comparison to Mexico and a little more dangerous than Colombia. There are numerous rankings of the world's most dangerous cities and Caracas is always listed among the 10 most dangerous and usually among the five most dangerous. . That said, if you take precautions and follow the instructions of locals closely, a visitor can avoid problems. I would not recommend living there if you had other options.
Hi Levi,
Caracas is the most dangerous capital city in South America, and you need to avoid certain areas, and it is recommended to stay indoors after dark or go out only as part of a group. You will also find that a lot of people in Venezuela are very suspicious about tourists (blame Hugo Chavez for that), especially witht the working class and poor people.
Very.
Caracas, Venezuela; Having never been to South America, how bad is it in comparison to say Colombia or Mexico?
