Hi Mandy,
the problem with a lot of these volunteer organizations is that they take a lot of money from you for volunteering. In South America you can volunteer for about $ 150.00/week which will provide room and board. The best thing is actually choose a destination country and any major hostel can hook you up with a local volunteer group. I did some volunteer work in Bolivia at a shelter for abused wild animals (mostly monkeys). It is called La Senda Verde, www.sendaverde.com
Check it out.
First of all, south america is not a country but part of the american continent. (yes, America is a continent, not the country USA).
If you wanna go there to help people, better you learn a bit about the country you wanna work before you go, people can be poor but they are very proud and may be offended if you treat them as part of the same group (each country has its own culture, language, currency, etc).
They are very much in need of teachers, doctors, nurses, etc, someone who can add something good in their community, so you wanna volunteer for what?
If you don't have much time to dedicate or to go to another country, better you volunteer in your own neighborhood or community where I bet there are many in need (i.e: senior people that cannot go for shopping, cannot clean their house, cannot read anymore or just to make some company)
yeah fist off south america is not a country. but if you want to volunteer you need to look at, ecuador, or peru. i would choose peru, because many people are helping ecuador. peru is not in its best, but they truly welcome people like you to help. you should watch the the "human experience" they went to peru and you could see what kind of help they need. peru overall is an amazing country, but with a little help, you could change many lives.
well i know how u can stay then after that they leave go
I really want to travel to south America to help with the country. i wanted to actually go to africa at first but i heard that most organizations wanted you to stay for at least 6 months when really i would only have one to two weeks to stay where i go...has anyone ever done this? what organization would you recommend? i need help to choose because most organizations are for students who want to learn where i really just want to volunteer. thanks everyone!!!
