The story goes that when the Portuguese-Spanish sailors were pulling into the Montevideo port back in the 1500s, one of them called out a variation of "Monte vide eu" which very loosely translates to "I see a mountain". There seems to be some disagreement as to the how factual this is but I've heard this retelling several times. If this is true, the sailors were more than likely pointing to a section of Montevideo called El Cerro which is to the Northwest of the main port area. El Cerro is where you can find La Fortaleza which is a fortress built in the 1800s. This area contains the highest hill in the Department of Montevideo.

Ha!
No.
During Spanish class my teacher had said something about getting extra credit. Her question was: Is there a mountain near the city of Montevideo?
I know that Montevideo means ''I see the mountains'' but I have looked everywhere online and found nothing that could help me! Please, if someone knows, I need the answer by early morning tomorrow. Thank you all! (:
