Best way to get to Machu Picchu from Lima?

Looking for a cheap, direct route. Can anyone help? How much will it cost? how long will it take?

The only way is to first reach Cuzco, no direct flights to MachuPicchu. You can take a train (there are three categories), which takes you to Aguas Calientes (this is the name of the town) is the best way (it takes about 3 hours).Then from here take a bus to Machu Picchu.

- Cusco - Ollantaytambo (round trip) in Bus (U.S. $ 7.00)

Take the bus front of the College of Science at the Plaza San Francisco (side of Avenida Grau).

- Ollantaytambo - Machupicchu Pueblo (round trip) Peru Rail train(U.S. $ 7.00)

Buy tickets two days before the trip.

- Machu Picchu Pueblo - Citadel of Machu Picchu (round trip) by bus Consettur (U.S. $ 10.00) time 30 minutes

- Entrance to Machupicchu ($ 20.00)

Buy into the offices of the INC (next to the Plaza de Armas of Machu Picchu Pueblo)

- Guide Service (U.S. $ 3.00)

TRAINS

Backpacker normal Train, snack and drinks not included

$ 46.00

$ 73.00

Panoramic Train Vistadome, tables, snack and drink included

$ 66.00

$ 113.00

You have to take a plane to Cusco, then a train to Aguas Calientes (which is the town below Machu Picchu) and then a bus will take you up to the ruins.

There's no direct way since there are no roads or airports around.

There really isn't a cheap direct route (the cheaper routes are a lot longer and indirect). First you have to fly from Lima. There is no direct way to go by bus. You have to go down the coast and through Arequipa which is nearly 2 days in a bus. You then have to go by bus and train from Cuzco. Prices have risen above those given in the long answer above. You need to get train tickets on line and you may now be able to get entrance tickets that way too.

Impossible, you need to go to Cusco and get a train to Machu Picchu.
