Remember, there are three ways people get to your blog:

1) Regular visitors, perhaps friends, who visit your blog regularly, maybe subscribe via the feed.

2) Those who are forwarded a link to a blog post, via email, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

3) Your blog post shows up in search engine results for a query

Your network of friends and social contacts helps grow the first category of visitors. But the real traffic comes from the next two sources, and to get that requires good, unique, interesting content. Obviously, writing about your vacation will only be interesting (if at all) to friends and family. To get beyond that requires that you have something of more general interest.

Sites like Digg, Reddit, etc., as mentioned by Quora User are good as well, but these are really only ways of increasing exposure of good content. If the content isn't there, your Digg post will go nowhere.

And remember, you probably want more than just "traffic". You want engagement, relationship with your readers, maybe for them to take action. There are many tricks for getting 10,000 people to spend 5 seconds on your web site and then disappear, never to be seen again. That is pointless. The goal should be to build up a loyal readership who come back to your blog, who comment on your posts, and who help you promote your better content when they post it to Digg/Reddit, etc.
