Dramatically changing the subject matter of a blog can have a negative aspect on SEO.

It's hard to say without knowing the site. Your best bet is too install google analytics and webmaster tools to your site. Those are free. You have to understand that your site was about psychology and that content was indexed accordingly. How many visitors did you get before.? To answer your question, dramitically changing your content and theme can have a negative affect.
It is only temporary if you don't change permalinks. So, changing your content drastically is bad for SEO, but only for a short term. Don't worry it will come back to its own. In the meantime you could do some link building.. :D

it was about psychology, changed it to feral cats pictures, changed back to psychology again yesterday, and for two days, there are very few visitors.
will it pick up again if i never change the contents again? i had erased everything from it and started from scratch.
