The Wal-Mart in our area has a bakery. They had many sturdy cardboard boxes, perfect for moving, free for the asking.
Costco and Sam's Club try to give boxes away to customers. That's how they get rid of them. Small liquor stores also sometimes throw boxes out the back door and then break them down at the end of the day.
Try the grocery store and liquor store. Boxes from the liquor store often have the "inserts" still in place -- great if you have glasses to pack.
You can buy nice new ones for a buck or two at Home Depot.
