What should I know if I ever buy a house under my name for someone?

Do NOT buy a house for anyone!! Do NOT buy a house or have your name on it, associated with it, or as a cosigner until YOU can make the payments. Period. No, it is not worse for the cosigner, it is worse for the principal person and then secondarily the cosigner. Don't do it! If your mother wants to get a house and leave it to you, she can do that without making you responsible. Get a house on your own when you are ready... don't let your mother guilt you into it.

My brother did that for my dad and both ended up bankrupt when dad couldn't pay since they were both equally responsible for making sure the mortgage got paid. Unless you are willing and able to make the payments by yourself, do not buy it for someone else. You have nothing to gain and a lot more to lose than they do.

DON"T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your mother cannot get a mortgage in just her name for a reason. She will default on the mortgage and ruin YOUR credit when you can't make the payments.

Plus, later on down the road, having a mortgage for your mother will hinder you being able to buy your own house

Never buy a house for anyone else and never buy a house unless YOU want to do so.

My mom recently asked me how do I feel buying a house under my name. She also stated she'd be the cosigner. I know things tend to be worse for the person cosigning if things don't go according to plan but if I go through with this I wanna know how this will affect me if something happens where my mom can't pay the mortgage. I'm only 20 and over worked hard to build my credit. The last thing I wanna do is screw it up because if something were to happen to my mom I wouldn't be able to pay for the house. What should I do and what a risks for me?
