Gas debt left from last tenants in a property that has been empty since may - whose responsibility is this?

Not yours. Get in touch with agents and find out if you will be paid back any cash for clearing the debt. If they are not playing, ask them to contact owner - he or she will already have been charged quite a lot of fees for re-letting the property and they will not want the deal going sour at this stage. And you have a right to move in without paying other tenants bills.

Phone British gas, they should send a bill to the landlord through the letting agency. You must make sure that they know it is not your debt and you are a new tenant. Take the meter readings and keep it safe.

It's not YOUR debt, but you may end up paying it anyway if you don't get a signed written document from the letting agent and/or the gas company as you move in. Be warned.

The agent is entirely responsible. You cannot accept another persons debt. The agent should provide the property with all ameneties and a reading taken at your occupancy. You are only liable for your use.

The previous utility user should have had the utility turned off.

By you turning the utility on would have no effect on what the precious user owe. You would have a new name, social security number, if required.

The utility would collect from the previous users. They have a system set up to do just this.

I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.

'FIGHT ON"

The debt would be in the name of the previous tenant. You are not responsible for this.

Not yours, that's for sure. Explain to the gas company the situation, have them send someone else the bill.

Do NOT rent this place until the bill has been paid.

We are due to move into a property Saturday and there is debt on the gas meter from the last tenants. I informed the letting agents of this and they told us they had cleared the debt for us, only they hadn't on the gas meter and told us we had to sort it out. As the property has been empty since May, whose legal responsibility is this?
