Cheerio means 'goodbye' but I'd say it sounds more of an English word, Scots Gaelic for goodbye is 'Mar sin leat' but like the rest of the UK Scots are more inclined to say 'bye' or 'see you'
It's an early 20thC way of saying 'goodbye' which originally came from 'God be with You' (Goodbye).

Cheerio is no longer in popular use here in London - instead, most of us simply say 'bye' or 'see you' when parting.
"Cherrio" was still popular in WW2
