In contrast to Americans, of whom I am one. Russians rather strive for higher thinking; intellectualism, as it were.
Americans strive for "bad" is good. "I am better than you". "My car is superior to yours". "Don't mess with me and my gun". "Ghetto" is cool.
The media and Americans have needed a "boogeyman" for decades. An arch-enemy; an arch-rival. It has become easy to hate Russia as the perennial enemy. First was USSR- "Russia". People did not even know WHAT USSR was, just called it- Russia. It was a nuclear nation that could annihilate USA in a nuclear war. It could be used to scare the pants off you, and was many times.
You now see in news, Russia never does any good. Space cooperation is chided by MotleyFool (a finance page) "We never want tio pay Russia for a ticket to space again" (or something like that). NASA to Russia: We Never Want to Write You Another Check (Googled it). (I agree, we need our own space program, but see the negativity?) It is something that people "gel" with. Russia, ISIS, Al Qaida, Taliban, etc. Another boogeyman to use to shape opinions.
This is a TRUE Russian. Today, we drove to a cake bakery, a couple KMs from the city in a marginal district of the city. Ona narrow road, i gave too much berth and fell off the road's packed snow. The extra low gear could not move me, neither could 4x4. In fewer than 5 minutes, a lady 75-90 years of age (from 2 or 3 houses down) walked up with a shovel. I dug a bit, cut the packed snow into a ramp, and soon drove on. She told us she often comes with her shovel to help people on that road. She is the epitome of a Russian, willing to help for the sake of help. When i read of American stories of "how sweet... how wonderful..." I think, well, these things happen all the time in Russia! Most Russian's attitudes is "we are all in this together".

I am European and I have to say that not everyone condems them. Just media are lying about them to make them looking bad but every knows that America is the evil one.
