In my experience, they don't bye and large. I lived in Italy for almost 14 years and traveled throughout Europe throughout that time plus many other trips. In all that time, I never had any problems at all for being an American. Certainly there are a few people who don't like Americans, but the chances of experiencing any issues while visiting Europe would be very small.
Europeans do not hate America, they dislike the American government and the American tourist behavior, loud, demanding and obnoxious.
Many young Europeans love American culture!

before entering any Restaurant check the language on the menu

Europeans don't hate Americans. Their are people we dislike but not because their American or any nationality. If you go to Italy they love Americans and are fascinated by American culture. No one is going to hate you because of your nationality or because of your gov most people if you treat them with respect and dignity you'll get the same.

people in Europe do not fully understand just how darn huge the US really is and how many different attitudes and cultures live together.
They usually see what the media projects, dumb white trash hillbillies, rich spoiled women, sports crazy chubby people who drink beer and swear.
The media does not give a good message to the world at large about how most Americans live their daily lives. Not so different then anywhere else.
