You can't move to the UK to work unless you get a work visa.
Work visas are given for highly qualified specialist jobs - take a look on the UK Occupation Shortage List for the current options. Generally; STEM qualifications are a good route in.
If you qualify for a job and can find a qualifying employer wiling to sponsor your visa, they will also help you relocate, and you'll be earning enough to live in the UK.
In addition to the Shortage Occupation List the most common way Americans work in the UK is under a Tier 2 intercompany transfer visa. This is where you are at a management level with a US company who transfers you to their UK office for a few years
I personally know Americans in the UK who were transferred over by American Express, Google, KPMG, Conde Nast, CNN, Loreal, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, Sony and Goldman Sachs, usually for a 2-3 year contract
Here is a link to the Shortage Occupation List. If you successfully apply for a job on this list, you should get a visa.
Jobs on the occupation shortage list and to get one of those you will will need a high level degree and several years of work experience before you could apply........ and before the employer would sponsor a work visa
