How multi-cultural is London?

I've grown up in a town where everyone is white. There is only one person from a foreign country who is from Canada...which is funny because they meet all the Canadian stereotypes. Anyway, a friend of mine told me that he went to London (not the tourist area, but the residential area) and he walked down a street for about half an hour and said everyone of them was from a not English...is this actually true? It might sound weird but remember I've grown up in an area where everyone is native and I just find it very odd that you would have so many foreigners.

Absolutely true - the most recent census shows that "White British" is now just slightly less than half of London. I grew up in a suburb of London which is now about 90% of Indian sub-continent origin, and contains the largest Sikh gurdwara outside India.

Remember that the UK was the focus of the British Empire and at one time, all of us (including Canadians!) were British subjects and freely able to move around the Empire. Many did and London was a natural magnet. Others from the Caribbean were invited to come after the Second World War to help rebuild from the devastation. London is rather exceptional, even so, because it's the capital and amongst other things, immigrants would just get off the plane and settle - Heathrow Airport nearby is a large reason for the suburb I grew up in being as it is.

So it would be incorrect to assume that someone of a different colour is foreign - easy immigration like that is no longer possible except from the EU, so anyone you see in London with a dark face is very likely to be the child, grandchild or even great-grandchild of an immigrant, be thoroughly British by birth, and sound like it if they spoke to you. The influx now is from eastern Europe, now that most countries there are in the EU too. And of course they're white.

Now answer me this. If you're white, in what way are you native to Canada? What about the First Peoples? ;)

London is very multi-cultural, about 1/3 of London's population are foreign-born

London is very multicultural. With property prices the way they are now, many British people cannot afford to live in London anymore so there are lots of rich foreigners. Go around Knightsbridge or Chelsea, two very expensive areas, and you are more likely to meet rich people living there who are from Russia, Qatar, France, US, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, India, Nigeria or wherever

"Whilst 45% of London's population is White British, the graph shows that it is by far the most common ethno-national group. A further 15% are from other white groups. The next largest ethnic groups in London are Indian and Black African each making up around 7% of the population."

There are tons of foreigners in London - you could walk for blocks and not see a white person. It's a great City and well worth a visit. (I used to live there).

London has always been an international city since it was the centre of the British Empirei

Your friend is right. Multi multi cultural.

Very multicultural, i have lived in london for 65 years,i can remember when it was all white, it is much more interesting now.

One of the most "diverse" cities imaginable and constantly becoming even more so. A lot of the white (working class) Londoners have flown to surrounding areas such as Essex

VERY but is a great place....
