British citizen by inheritance?

Hey guys, thanks for reading.

Anyways the likely thing is the UK is going to leave the EU. The conservatives appear to have the UK election won, which means they will leave Europe as the conservatives want to become independent.

I'm Irish (live in the republic but plan to work in the UK). (London to be precise).

My mother is British born, she was born in London in 1972. She currently holds a Irish passport. Is my mother British by birth and do I inherit this nationally (born 1995 if that's relevant).

I just want to be safe, I'm sure if the UK leaves the EU the repercussions are gonna change things a lot in Europe and the British Isles.

I just want to be safe as having an Irish passport would grant EU citizenship and a British one UK nationality too if they leaves.

Thanks guys.

No, the conservatives do not want to leave the EU. But they think they may have to offer a referendum on it. Nothing will change for Irish citizens if we did leave the EU, in fact most of the things people associate with the EU were in fact set up 50 or in the case of Ireland closer to 90 years ago. There are treaties and agreements covering every aspect of trade and cross border movement which have been there forever, so what the EU really does is debatable. Anyway, certainly no change for things between Ireland and the UK, you have the right to live vote and work here EU or no EU.

The Conservatives do NOT want to leave the EU. It's just that some of them are less keen on it, and the rise of UKIP has scared them, so they have promised a referendum on the subject to try and keep Conservative voters voting Conservative.

Opinion polls suggest that if there is a referendum, and not even UKIP are suggesting leaving the EU without letting us vote on it, it will be a narrow majority to stay in.

Your mother is British by birth as she was born in the UK before 1983. The significance of that date is that before then, just being born in the UK made you British so that's all I need to know to be sure. Therefore you are British too, either by birth or by descent depending on where you were born. It seems both you and your mother have dual nationality so you're sitting pretty whatever way it goes.

It's not likely at all - there's going to be a referendum, but that doesn't mean the British people will vote for it (just as the Scottish didn't vote for independence).

You need to read the actual facts of what is going on, rather than make things up in your head.

The Tories do not want to leave the EU but to placate their right wing that do, they promised a referendum if they win the election.

Is NOT likely we will leave since the majority are in favour ....NB..The CONSERVATIVES who have just won the election got ONLY 39% of the popular VOTE....We have had agreements with ROI since creation of Free State, so you no problem coming here whether in EU or not..Should know that if Irish....

So very very wrong. As your mother is Irish so are you. Britain goes by citizenship not the plot of land you was born on. Her being born here does NOT make her British - she got her (Irish) citizenship from her parents and you are still Irish.

as Guru said, there were agreements between Ireland and Britain before the EU; you will still be able to work/live here.
