Young Gringo Moving to Latin America?

My husband and I live very comfortably on less than $2,000 a month in Costa Rica. We even bought our house here. We live in a small town away from the beach. The cost of living is higher in any beach area and in any country, also the crime is higher in tourist areas. The city is more expensive also. We live in a great community with wonderful neighbors, I could ask for a better place to live. You can find a local small house to rent in this area for around $100 a month. Utilities would be around $25 a month and water under $7. What will get you is the cost of some of the food. Going out to eat at a local place called a soda is very cheap; around $5 per person and that includes a natural drink. You can live very comfortably on $1500 a month here. Your medical insurance would be under $90 a month and that covers everything, prescriptions, labs, surgery, dental, doctors visits. There are no co-pays unless it is something that you don't have to have. We bought our house for around $30,000 and it is 613 sq ft. Most people here call it a big house. It is a simple laid back life. You can qualify for the pensioner status with no problem, you just need to make $1,000 a month, clean background check, and after gaining residency you must open a bank account here. It is easy to do. Pura Vida!

I'll write about Central America, as this is the region I know the most. Costa Rica is really pricey compared to its neighbors, Nicaragua and Panama. $1,500 runs out quickly if you're living in the city, but can last a bit if you're set in a smaller town on the coast. How much you'd need here also depends on your lifestyle. Going out can get expensive fast, as well as having accommodations that you're used to in the States. Hot water in the kitchen is NOT a standard here. Bathrooms at cheaper places have something called 'suicide showers', you can google for more info. There are plenty accommodations that have amenities you're probably used to, but they are much more expensive than a standard local home.

All three countries have great beaches, Panama City has the best nightlife and the most developed infrastructure in the region. $1,500 is good amount for a comfortable life there. However, the locals have a bad rep as being not friendly and even flat out rude. Costa Rica has a lot of US influence (you'll find Walmart, all major food chains, etc.), and a big expat community. Nicaragua is the least developed, and most affordable. There are few spots that have small expat communities.

As for the women, finding one without a gold-digger mentality isn't impossible but it isn't easy either. To give you an example of a local context: Costa Rica has very aggressive laws towards men regarding mother/child rights, even if you're not married. One of its features is that a father of a minor (no matter what's his origin/nationality) cannot leave the country without permission of a mother, or paying child support for 13 months in advance (even if he wants to leave just for a week). Some women have children with multiple men, making their living off of child support money. They can take advantage of guys that aren't careful and get pregnant early on into relationship. As the abortion is illegal here, a lot of guys end up with an unwanted children. I don't know much about the laws in other Latin countries, but have this in mind when doing your research. Overt friendliness should be a warning sign. If it looks like it's too good to be true, than it probably is too good to be true. With that said, I don't want to scare you off, I just want you to be careful.

Good luck and pura vida!

With your income of 1500 dollars a month you can comfortably live in most of the latian american countries. From Mexico, Chile, and Belize to Dominican Republic and CostaRica, you have wide variety of choices. Brazil is also a very good option if you can manage Portuguese. Okay now lets talk about Hispanic women. They do love gringos but getting a women who does not treat you like an ATM will take time. You need to go settle in interior parts of the country rather than in big cities. By doing that you will not only save lots of money, you will also meet genuine women seeking real love than just a sugar daddy. Good luck with your future endeavors.

Costa Rica. The women adore Gringos, their husbands, and their children. You will easily be able to acquire citizenship with your monthly income but it will need to be deposited in a Costa Rica bank monthly. The country is breathtakingly beautiful as are the women.

you r gonna get "pepeado", latin immigrants to the US are much different than the actual people in south america. in the US they are cocky and have copied white personalities. if they see a tall white foreigner in night club then they drug you and rob you (thats what pepeado is)

Hello, I am 24, I'm educated and I'm thinking about moving to Latin America. I spent 7 years in the Army and will draw a check from Uncle Sam of $1,500 a month for the rest of my life from the Army. I've always been attracted to hispanic women, in fact that's really the only time of women I date. What country would be the best place for me to move to? Hopefully somewhere that has good night life, beautiful beaches and where the girls like gringos. I'm good looking, and I'm fairly tall 6'2 and I speak french and Italian along with English and I'm working in my Spanish now. Where should I go? I don't want to be treated like an ATM machine, but would like to go somewhere they really like american men.
