A hand bag can match an outfit and is a fashion accessory as well as a necessity. A back pack does not and is not.
When I do use a backpack I tend to just sling it over one shoulder too. Easier to get off and on.
Old King, whom said ladies don't carry a back pack, when was the last time you were at a major airport like LAX, Montreal, Toronto, Sydney, Rome?
Personally, I don't find backpacks appealing and they look odd with the type of clothing that I wear. Even if i did wear a backpack, i'd wear it one shoulder anyways because it feels odd wearing it on both (:
