Both countries are no more than 2-hour's flight away.
The first time I visited Japan was on my way to my mom's homeland, Korea.
The connecting flight overbooked and we got to spend a day in Narita.
WAY COOL!
I think it would be unique for you to see both places.
Of course, it won't be cheap.
They are NOT similar.
Asia is just like Europe. Countries can be close to each other... but WORLDS apart culturally.
Actually the flight from Korea to Japan is 20 minutes and 2 hours by boat.
Anyway, don't think like that. Generally flights with stop overs are generally cheaper, so flying to Korea with a stop over in Japan is the way to go.
Try and find a Korean travel agent who can probably arrange the best deal for you to visit both countries. You stop over in Japan on the way to Korea for a few days then stop over on the way back for a few days and also spend time in Korea.
