it depends on your interests... williamsburg, virginia or washington dc is good for people who like history. the scenery in virginia is also relaxing and beautiful. williamsburg is more sparsely populated so it has more a 'homey' feel, while washington dc is incredibly crowded with nightmare traffic. also monticello (home of thomas jefferson) is also in virginia. if you like the beach then miami, florida (but it is super expensive and crowded), or southern california (also super expensive), or beaches in south carolina or north carolina coast. north carolina and south carolina also have many historical sites and less crowded beaches. if you like cool urban cities then austin, texas or san francisco, california. those cities also have excellent places to eat and excellent warm weather. other cool cities for young people are boston, massachusetts (also has many historical sites) and seattle, washington and portland, oregon. i would say wherever you go, definitely take a day to relax explore a national park!

seriously, don't even consider the popular states and cities like new york and california. they're overrated! in my opinion, rhode island is the best (and then new hampshire, and then maine).

i'm not biased. i'm not from rhode island. i dont even live in the US. but as a tourist, rhode island really took my breath away. such a classy place! the people who live there are rich but have simple lifestyles.
