Should I dye my hair darker so I dont stand out in Costa Rica?

No, unless you have always wanted to do it.

Unless you walk and dress like a Tica (and you won't) , you will be easily spotted as a foreigner anyway--except perhaps in a dimly lit bar. Not worth the effort.

There are lots of blond and light haired tourists including Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians. Remember about 10% of Costa Ricas are of Northern European background to. FYI: Americans and Canadians are probably the only people in the world who think blonds are dumb (how could Germans or Swedes), this stereotype seems to be a characteristic of North American culture-- or at worst North American blonds.

Hi Emilia,

DON'T dye your hair darker just because you go to Costa Rica; there's absolutely no reason to do so. Of course most Ticos have dark hair but some of them have blonde hair as well. Besides, there are tons of tourists in CR and a lot of them have blonde hair, which means you will not really stand out. I spend a lot of time in Central and South America and meeting a lot of people with blonde hair from all over the world all the time and none of them had any problems because of that.

Have a great time in Costa Rica, and I am sure that you won't be "Taken". Lol.

No that's a bit extreme, only do it if you really want it, you won't be labeled here as anything other than a foreign, and honestly if your spanish isn't as good then the only thing you'll get is helpful people trying to help you.

It doesn't matter if you are blond, brown, black, red...

Costa Ricans can see if you are a tourist anyway.

Have a good trip!

Just wear glasses and be "smart blonde American" :)

Hmm..you don't have to pull a Mit Romney lol I say natural color is best

It is up to you. It's what on the inside that counts. Looks doesn't matter. Just be you!

Im travelling abroad this summer to Costa Rica to study spanish for 2 months. Im a little nervous because I have never travelled outside the US before, and I'm not quite confident in my Spanish speaking skills yet either. Plus my hair is pretty blonde. Should I darken it up before I leave so that I don't have a sign on my forehead that screams dumb, blonde, American?? I don't want any 'Taken' scenarios haha. But for real....
