I had a friend that went to England a couple of years ago, and he claimed that Texas was infamous among the people there, as opposed to other states, whom were virtually unknown. He also claimed that everyone was instantly fond of him when he revealed that he was from Texas. However, he is known to be a compulsive liar and is the "proud Texan" type that thinks we should secede from the nation, so I don't really know how credible his claims are.
Anyway, I will be in Central Europe, but this question really pertains to people from any country. I, personally, do not know the names of regions/states/provinces in countries outside of my own and our neighboring Canada and Mexico, and I wouldn't really expect people of other countries to know the names of our states. I have been taught (incorrectly, I assume) for most of my life that America is like the center of the world--and of course! everyone knows about us--but I have a feeling that this is a nationalistic fib.
So, do people in other countries know about Texas? If so, are we particularly well known, or do people in other countries just know all of the states? And just for funsies, what are some international opinions on Texas?
G'day Madison,
Thank you for your question.
Most people would have knowledge of and views about Texas. This is due to the fact that the USA is very prominent in world affairs and in popular culture. Many people would have views based on popular culture such as westerns and shows like Dallas and because of prominent Texans such as George W. Bush.
Texas due to its size is particularly well-known with only California and Florida matching it for profile. (New York City is more well-known than New York). Many people would view Texas as a conservative state due to its profile as the biggest "red state" and as home of the Bushes particulalry George W. Bush.
Regards
Texas is amongst the well known states of the USA. It is famous because of the western stuff that is still present, for really stupid rednecks (no offence there are stupid rednecks in all the USA but since Texas is most well known and southly it we think they all live there), and problems with mexicans. But don't think people in europe don't know more then five states because we get good education who learns us about geography and thus most people know the existance of at least thirty states
Its one of the better known states.
The better known states of the US are California, New York, Texas, and Florida. Many European nations, and some Latin American nations will be familiar with Texas but many Asian and African nations wont even know it exists. They only know what the USA is.
Texas is one of the well known states, it's about 50% larger than Germany and it's economy can rival most European countries. Yes it's well known.
Some countries do some will have no clue. There's third world countries who don't have enough education to know about Texas. The wealthier the country the more likely they are to know about it.
